What to Know Before Getting Dermal Fillers

Are you interested in getting dermal fillers? Are you excited but nervous?

We are here to break it down for you and answer the questions you may have before getting dermal fillers. Here are some of the more common questions our clients ask when considering dermal fillers.

Is There Anything I Should Avoid Before Getting Fillers?

Yes, in order to prepare you want to avoid alcohol consumption the day before and refrain from taking Advil, aspirin, or ibuprofen. The reason for this is because these products thin your blood and can cause more bleeding or swelling to the area that is being injected.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

A dermal filler is a gel-like substance that is injected into the skin to help with smoothing out facial wrinkles, or to give an even tighter, more volumized look (depending on the filler) that helps restore a younger, softer appearance. Most fillers are temporary and generally last anywhere from six to nine months.

How Many Dermal Fillers Should I Be Getting?

Many people are concerned about the number of fillers they should get, and typically do not realize how much filler is in a syringe. To give you an idea, a packet of ketchup is equal to 10 syringes of dermal fillers (not much at all)! When trying to create volume or to get rid of fine lines, it will most likely take more than just one syringe to get the results you want. We analyze how much bone structure and volume our patients have lost over the years in determining what you will need. It is all about your expectations and the results you want to see!

How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost?

The saying “You get what you pay for” is true! When purchasing fillers, you are not just paying for the filler itself, but more importantly, you are paying for the skillset of the injector. We like to think of injecting as an art! For example, you wouldn’t want someone without experience injecting you for the first time. Unfortunately, many of the patients who visit Skin Perfect come to reverse previous work done somewhere else at what they thought was a “deal”.  Ultimately, they end up spending more money because they have to get things fixed. Even worse, choosing an injector based solely on pricing could potentially mean that he or she isn’t qualified or experienced, making your treatment extremely high risk for adverse effects.

Do Dermal Fillers Hurt?

This is a very common question.  While everyone has a different level of pain tolerance, a good amount of our patients state that our topical numbing cream does wonders for them. Many of them indicate that getting dermal fillers is very tolerable! One thing about fillers that some people do not know is that they have the numbing agent lidocaine in the actual filler itself, so while you are getting injected, you are also getting numbed, making for a very comfortable procedure.

How Long Does it Take for Dermal Filler to Settle?

This is a BIG one! When getting fillers, you must know that bruising and swelling is very likely. Since every person’s body is different, the swelling and bruising will vary.  We also do not recommend getting fillers if you have an event coming up in the near future. Fillers typically take about two weeks to settle! It is possible that it may take less time depending on how your body reacts and adapts to the filler. It is important to keep this in mind and not be alarmed. You may be swollen for three to five days – this is normal. The swelling will go down! However, if the swelling lasts more than two weeks, we suggest you see a specialist. We recommend that our patients give the fillers the time they need to do their job so that you may get the results you are paying for!

What Should I Do After Getting Dermal Fillers?

Icing is good! Apply ice to the area that is swollen for ten minutes on and then off for up to thirty minutes. For our patients that tend to bruise more easily, we recommend using Arnica which we sell for your convenience. This will help minimize the potential for bruising. You will want to avoid any strenuous exercise, spas, saunas, or hot showers for at least 24 hours.

So there you have it – the in’s and out’s of things you should know when getting fillers! Our goal is to make the process for our patients easy and we want them to leave happy. We don’t just want our patients to tell us what they want, but we also want them to understand how we are going to get them there. The more knowledge and information our patients receive from us about the procedure they are getting, the more comfortable and confident they will be!
