Common Korean Skincare Ingredients

Snail Mucin

Snail mucin is known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anti-aging properties, but it is also highly beneficial for wound healing and skin regeneration. Snail mucin is primarily composed of water, but it also contains enzymes and specialized proteins known as glycoproteins, which help stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Snail mucin components are thought to enhance and improve the hydration, texture, tone, and overall quality of the skin. (3) Glycolic acid is known to help reverse sun damage and eliminate dead skin cells, while allantoin is known for its soothing and moisturizing properties.

Ginseng

Ginseng is a medicinal herb that has been used for thousands of years throughout ancient China, Korea, Japan, and America. It is the root of the plant genus Panax, which translates to ‘treat all’ in Greek. (1, 5) Korean ginseng has a myriad of potentially beneficial skin properties and can positively impact the skin’s aging process, skin cells, and pigment-producing cells. When applied, Korean ginseng has been researched for its ability to reduce inflammation, repair DNA damage caused by radiation and pollution, as well as prevent the breakdown of collagen in the skin. The active components in ginseng have also been shown to reduce hyperpigmentation and inhibit melanin production. Ginseng may also improve wound healing by enhancing the growth of fibroblasts, or specialized connective tissue cells. (1)

Licorice Root

Licorice root is a botanical that has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years to address various health and aesthetic concerns. Licorice root is often used as a primary skincare ingredient in Korea due to its anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants, and skin-brightening effects. Three main components contribute to these benefits, including glycyrrhizin, glabridin, and isoliquiritigenin. Glycyrrhizin is the compound that gives licorice its sweet taste, but it also contains anti-inflammatory properties and can help regenerate tissue after damage. Glabridin is known for its skin-brightening properties and can inhibit the enzyme that produces melanin, allowing dark spots to fade. Isoliquiritigenin helps strengthen the outer layer of the skin, reduces redness, and additionally helps encourage faster recovery after sustaining an injury. (6)

Green Tea

Green tea extract has quickly become a popular ingredient in K-beauty due to its positive internal and external health benefits. Green tea is known for being rich in antioxidants and producing anti-inflammatory effects when consumed. When applied to the skin, green tea provides these same benefits and has been shown to reduce the number of sunburn cells and reduce damage caused by UV radiation. (4)

Centella Asiatica (Cica)

Centella asiatica, also known as centella, Cica, or Gotu Kola, is a plant that has been used medicinally for over 2,000 years. This plant is primarily known for reducing redness, containing anti-inflammatory properties, and aiding wound healing, but has also been historically used to treat other conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, lupus, and leprosy. The active ingredients in Centella stimulate collagen synthesis, especially in wounds, and have been shown to thicken the skin and stabilize connective tissue growth. (2)

Rice Water

Rice water has recently become more widely used as an ingredient in skincare and hair care products due to its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, whitening, and moisturizing properties. Rice water is the starchy water that remains after washing or boiling rice. Rice water has been used historically throughout Korea and China for its aesthetic and medicinal properties, and is packed with protein, amino acids, vitamins, and more. Rice water is known to help brighten the skin, reducing dark spots and redness and enhancing the overall tone and appearance of the skin. The starch found in the water is thought to help strengthen the skin barrier, possibly stimulating the production of essential lipids known as ceramides. Additionally, antioxidants found in rice water have been found to help improve collagen and elastin in the skin, resulting in improved elasticity and firmer and tighter skin. (7)

The 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine

The Korean skincare routine, more famously known online as the 10-step Korean skincare routine, is a skin regimen known for its layering of products from lightest to thickest.

  1. The first step is cleansing the skin with an oil cleanser to help dissolve oil on the skin.
  2. The second step is double-cleansing the skin with a water-based cleanser to ensure there is no remaining residue left.
  3. The third step consists of an exfoliator to help remove dead cells from the skin’s surface. This step is often performed only a few times a week, as over-exfoliation can cause breakouts or irritation.
  4. This is followed by the fourth step, the application of toner to help rebalance the skin’s pH. Korean toners are noticeably different from American or Western toners as they focus on hydration rather than exclusively focusing on balancing the pH.
  5. The fifth step in the routine is to apply an essence to add a layer of hydration and nourishment for the skin. Essences are skin products that were conceptualized in Korea and are a key step in the Korean skincare routine. It is a light and watery skin product that often contains ingredients such as rice extracts, ginseng, and hyaluronic acid.
  6. The sixth step consists of applying serums or ampoules, two different types of concentrated treatments. Serums are lightweight formulas designed for addressing specific needs, such as pigmentation or brightening. Ampoules are also designed for targeted treatment, but are more concentrated and are used for short-term treatments.
  7. Once the ingredients have been absorbed into the skin, a sheet mask is applied as the seventh step to provide deep, intense hydration and to further promote the absorption of each product. Different sheet masks also provide different benefits, with many containing brightening effects or additional, beneficial ingredients like collagen.
  8. The eighth step is to apply an eye cream to hydrate the under-eye area, as the skin near the eyes tends to be more prone to dryness or aging.
  9. The ninth step is the application of moisturizer to seal in the prior layers.
  10. The routine is then finalized by the use of sunscreen to protect the skin from UV damage, as 80% of facial aging is derived from sunlight. (8)

The application of sunscreen is only completed in the morning, meaning that each patient will only complete 9 steps at night when performing their routine. While this skincare regimen tends to be more time-consuming and takes more effort, patients are often left with glowing, glassy skin and a clear complexion.

Rejuran

Rejuran is a K-beauty stable derived from salmon DNA. The polynucleotides within salmon DNA have been explored for their ability to rejuvenate the skin through enhanced cellular regeneration. It is thought to diminish fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin elasticity.
