How Does Cryotherapy Work?
Cryotherapy has been utilized in medicine since the 1960s as a way to minimize pain and control inflammation during surgery. In aesthetics, it is often intertwined with other treatment protocols to target and encourage the healing of skin lesions. This is particularly common in the treatment of acne. (1)
What is TargetCool?
TargetCool uses a detachable cartridge that releases concentrated CO2 gas, a cryogen, from a pressurized can to perform cryotherapy. The device then applies the gas at a rapid speed to quickly cool the skin under controlled circumstances. This application rapidly cools the skin to the programmed temperature. It contains infrared sensors that accurately measure the skin’s temperature during the procedure to make sure it stays consistent.
The TargetCool device has three main modes that serve different purposes:
- Cooling Mode: This mode is used for temporary pain, swelling, and inflammation reduction. Providers typically use this mode during minor surgical procedures and treatments to keep their patients comfortable.
- Boosting Mode: TargetCool Boosting is utilized after minor procedures, sprains, and injuries that may result in hematoma. This cooling works to reduce this complication and is often helpful during rehabilitation treatment plans.
- Freezing Mode: The Freezing mode can surgically remove skin tags and treat actinic keratosis by applying cryogenic gasses to the skin. This causes an immediate drop in temperature to initiate tissue damage.

This device allows Dr. Kwok and his colleagues to control the topical cooling of the skin before, during, and after treatments. TargetCool is extremely precise and programmable, allowing your provider complete control over the length of time and overall temperature of the cryotherapy. The skin cools within approximately 2 to 3 seconds after application. Patients who are nervous about certain treatments, like dermal fillers or microneedling, can receive TargetCool cryotherapy during their procedures. TargetCool Preparation and Treatment Steps
There is little necessary preparation for TargetCool treatments. However, if you are using TargetCool in combination with another procedure, there may be additional instructions to follow. The process is non-invasive and non-irritating, so we ask that patients simply arrive with a clean face without makeup. If your treatment is somewhere else on the body, be sure to avoid applying heavy creams or harsh products to the skin leading up to your appointment.
Your provider programs the TargetCool device according to your treatment plan, then passes the booster nozzle over the skin. This directly delivers the CO2 cryo-frozen solution onto the skin using a powerful pressurized jet. Most treatments take around 30 to 45 minutes to complete depending on the size and location of the treatment area. If TargetCool is implemented for pain relief during a different treatment, your total procedure time may differ.
Results
Your results will depend significantly on your treatment plan and the condition of your skin. Directly after TargetCool treatment, your skin will likely look and feel hydrated and rejuvenated immediately. Any inflammation caused by additional procedures will be less bothersome and noticeable as your skin heals. If we perform TargetCool as a singular treatment for skin revitalization, then you will have no downtime and very little to no adverse effects to navigate after your appointment. This allows you to continue your daily activities promptly.
To preserve your results, we recommend wearing sunscreen at all times when exposing your skin to UV rays, pollution, and free radicals in the air. This protects your skin from sunburn and can prevent the occurrence of any new sun damage.
Corresponding & Complementary Treatments
For those receiving TargetCool alone for skin rejuvenation and serum-based treatments, there is often no need to combine the procedure with others. It is, however, possible to improve the results of cosmetic treatments by adding cryotherapy to your procedure plan.
Injectables
To accompany TargetCool treatment, many patients receive injectables to further improve their results with little to no discomfort. FAQ
Is TargetCool safe?
Yes! The device is FDA-cleared for many applications including pain management and is a very safe method of topical skin cooling.
Why is temperature regulation important during TargetCool treatments?
Regulating the temperature and length of time the CO2 gas interacts with the skin allows every patient to receive the same and optimal treatment as the one before them. There are also several adverse effects to cooling the skin too much too fast apart from inconsistent results. TargetCool uses infrared sensors to create highly accurate procedures that are safe and effective.
Will a TargetCool treatment alone give me the same results as dermal filler injection?
No. TargetCool works to rejuvenate and hydrate the skin, but the results of dermal fillers cannot be duplicated by this treatment alone. When they are combined, you can enjoy the benefits of both procedures without the common discomfort of injectables.
